Well, what can I say? The trip was great. I’ve always wanted to go to Norway and now I can say I’ve been there and done that. I made sure to research some restaurants in each port (we were on a cruise) so that we could taste what Scandinavia had to offer.
Our first port was Amsterdam. I visited Amsterdam when I was much younger and really didn’t remember much of it. This time around, we had a great time. We got to see the windmills, how cheese is made, how wooden clogs are made, toured Edam and later on walked around the city, passing through the red light district to finally find the restaurant I had found on the internet.
The restaurant I had found was called Cafe Luxembourg. It’s in the heart of Amsterdam and the menu really appealed to me mostly because part of the menu is their cigar selection. Despite being Cuban, I’m not a cigar afficionado, nor do I smoke them…BUT any menu that includes cigars must be ritzy. I printed out a map and off we were in Amsterdam in search of Cafe Luxembourg.
It was quite a trek to find the restaurant, but we found the people were pretty helpful. We stopped by a hostel and the front desk person gave us a map with directions.
When we finally arrived, we were seated in the back by the windows and the atmosphere was great. We had a nice view of the canals and so we just sat there sipping wine and dommelsch beer while we watched people boating around.
Rus with his Dommelsch beer. It was the best beer he’s ever tasted!
Here I am with my glass of Pinot Gris by Domaine Viticole, Colmar in Alsace. It was literally the best wine I’ve ever tasted in my entire life. We were planning on buying a bottle to take back to the ship, but were in a time crunch to make it back and didn’t. I really regret that. Sigh…

We both ended up ordering the french onion soup which was fanFREAKINtastic. I’m not a huge fan of french onion soup to begin with, so the fact that I say it was fanFREAKINGtastic means “IT WAS REALLY GOOD.”
For our entrees, Rus was feeling pretty adventurous and ordered the fried Sea Wolf which in no way had any relation to the band. In fact, we had no idea what the hell a Sea Wolf was…but it sounded cool. The Sea Wolf came with a mustard dill sauce that was amazing. I might try to make some at home…It’s that type of sauce that tastes good on anything. I think it might be pretty good with steak.
Lastly, I ordered the Entrecote a la Bordelaise (grilled sirloin with a red wine sauce) with a side of potato gratin and ratatouille. We don’t make that much steak at home, so I took full advantage of this trip.

This restaurant made such an impression on Rus since this was the first taste of European food that he’s ever had that he wouldn’t stop talking about it….until our next port! Oslo!!! Tomorrow!
